Have you ever found yourself talking like an expert among your friends or family on a topic you are skilled at? However, when you go to work you are quiet as a church mouse on the same topic? Or, wanted to apply for a job but once you read the responsibilities list on the posting you opted to remain in your current role? Do you have a set of skills that will allow you to open your own business but haven’t? Do you give your 100% hustle ability to your job but give zero to 40% for your own business?
A salary can provide us with a certain level of security while also serving as a barrier to
our advancement. When an employer makes changes we grumble but eventually do what is asked to retain our employment. Does any of this ring a bell? There is a name for this behavior, Imposter Syndrome. In a nutshell, we are intimidated by the task assuming everyone else is the expert and will call out us perpetrating a fraud. In turn we will avoid or procrastinate goals or tasks toward our advancement.
A few tips to help:
- Seek out smaller opportunities to help prep you for the greater one you want.
- Set aside time for you to think about what concerns you have and consider solutions.
- Practice, Prepare and Double Check
- Boost up your confidence with a song that gives you that extra umph! Wear your confidence and wear it well.
- Be selective in who you tell about your uncertainties (Stay away from critical people but also those who agree with all of your decisions).
- Create opportunities for you to showcase your talent in a safe space.
I hope this information helps you start working on your goals. I look forward to hearing about your success!
